The Changing Nature of E Business ~ Ethics and Trust (04/28/2012)
... The lack of face-to-face interaction in transactions and the anonymity of the Internet result in an impersonal style of business where trust must be implied but is not necessarily there. Daughtrey (2001) notes that deliberately falsified information is also more difficult to detect. Again on the subject of trust in e-business, Daughtrey (2001) refers to the conditions consumers expect when conducting business with or purchasing from the Internet: Generalised reputation or perception of supplier. Customer expectations for security, privacy and confidentiality. Assurances provided by supplier (such as certifications or guarantees)....
Different Kinds of Productivity (04/28/2012)
... If the inputs and output quantity remain the same and the output quality, or the number of features or options increases, value creation and performance nanoproductivity will increase. If the enterprise can command a higher price for its outputs, the economic microproductivity will also rise. However, if competitors also raise quality and increase features and options, prices may remain stable, or drop, even though the value of what is being delivered to the customers has increased (assuming that they want and benefit from the improved quality, extra features, and options). So, while all participants are “more productive” from a performance point of view, the economic impacts will be far harder to measure or may not have changed at all. Better knowledge at the point-of-action —the workplace — makes it possible to deliver more with less or to provide higher quality outputs without increased efforts....

Ethical Salesmanship (12/31/2011)
... In the current job market, many companies are restructuring and laying off at an accelerated rate. More and more pressure is being put on various sales departments to bring in more revenue. This can create underlying fear and frustration that often results in a lack of caring, resulting in lower standards and compromising of values. A recent survey stated that in a group of 18- to 34-year-olds, 79 percent believed that there were no absolute ethical standards. To some, this statistic may seem high, yet it may easily reflect the changes plaguing companies in the last few years....
Make your work space work for you (12/19/2011)
... The best position is to face the door in order to appear commanding and to see who is approaching. The wall or corner will offer you energetic support and you are more likely to feel confident about future business if you can see it coming. Alternatively if moving your desk is impossible, place a mirror on your monitor to allow clear visibility. To increase the level of chi energy flow leave at least 7-9 inches of space between each piece of furniture. Unnecessary items of furniture should be stored away and taken out when needed so that workers feel less claustrophobic and are more relaxed....
The Imposter Syndrome: How to Fake Until You Make It (09/18/2011)
... Psychologists call this “The Imposter Syndrome.” (aka The Impostor Phenomenon) I am not a psychologist nor do I play one in this book. This book is about my obstacles and personal experiences and the strategies I’ve used and developed to overcome the self-doubt I lived with for many years. I thought that once I built a successful business and was receiving international acclaim for my work in the martial arts, the self-doubt would evaporate. Instead, my self-doubt returned with a new name, The Imposter Syndrome....
Bang a Gong Sell More Cars. Bang a Gong Sell More Anything! (09/17/2011)
... In addition to the customer, it is also a celebratory moment for the salesperson. He or she has also negotiated the obstacle course with the customer. Although the salesperson may run this obstacle course several times a day, it is not always easy to get the customer to finish it, to get the sale completed, especially in this age of low-ball internet car shopping. The salesperson enjoys experiencing the gong because it means they will be earning a commission, improving their stock in the sales manager’s eyes, and gaining bragging rights until the next time the gong is hit. But most importantly, it is a celebratory moment for the dealership....
How to make good presentations (09/08/2011)
... Slides or overheads are suitable for a formal presentation; a flip chart can be used for more informal events. Visual aids can reduce comprehension time by about 40 percent. Plan to accommodate the different types of learning styles: visual; auditory; kinesthetic Your presentation will have the greatest effect if it includes all three forms. Plan your agenda. It should cover: welcome and introductions; objectives of the presentation; description of the problem; explanation of the solution; benefits to your audience; your action plan; your methodology in reaching a conclusion; question-and-answer session request for permission to proceed; wrap-up....
Empowering: Giving Responsibility (09/06/2011)
... Make sure that people know the limits of their authority. When they show confidence and ability within those limits, consider increasing their power. Give people a chance to find their own ways to attain objectives. Don't fix other people's mistakes without first giving them a chance to do it themselves. They will learn to be responsible for their own decisions if they have an opportunity to learn from their own errors....
Empowerment: Taking Responsibility (09/06/2011)
... If you are a team-based organization, there will be an expectation that you and your team will become increasingly self-managed. This presents exciting possibilities. You should encourage your team to meet to identify existing boundaries and parameters; new boundaries; increased responsibilities for such things as who will run team meetings, who will decide on allocating work, who will schedule holidays, who will deal with conflict, who will be responsible for hiring decisions, and how these decisions will be made. If you are in a unionized organization and are part of the bargaining unit, you may be discouraged from doing things that are deemed to be managerial in nature. If you are in doubt, discuss the issue with your boss and your shop steward....
Standards of Excellence Practiced by Ethical Leaders (09/05/2011)
... General Electric's recent declining stock values may trouble investors, but it still was recognized as one of Fortune's 2002 Global Most Admired Companies and received the highest marks for its quality of management. Compare it to the relatively young MCI WorldCom, a company struggling in a quagmire of ethical issues, and the sustaining success of GE is clearly manifested. The following chapter leads you through hands-on exercises that will cause you to reflect on the many elements that comprise ethical leadership. To get started, we will discuss the following five components of ethical leadership: communication, quality, collaboration, succession planning, and tenure. Ethical Communication Ethical leaders set the standard of truth for every employee they lead....
Ethical Workplace Conduct (09/05/2011)
..." The venerable Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and its regulations impose extensive sets of rules aimed at imposing a fairness standard when companies create retirement programs for their staff. Employment and hiring practices legislation, civil rights laws, gender equity, and sexual-preferences cases are all aimed at bringing a legal abstraction, the "corporation," down to earth by defining the duties and social mores with which corporations must comply in relationships with individuals. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act has tackled the ethically and culturally complex area of standards for business practices for our corporate citizens all over the world. Criminal actions against vast international corporations and their auditors and attorneys seek to overlay a very real set of criminal consequences onto the decision-making and operations of even the largest organizations. But the exploration of the meaning of citizenship for corporations does not stop with the legal, judicial, legislative, regulatory, or criminal infrastructure of our society....
Presentations: Using Visual Media (09/04/2011)
... Have small pieces of masking tape ready (keep them on the legs of the flip-chart stand) to post important sheets on the wall. This will keep key ideas in front of your audience. Besides writing down key points, use the flip chart for diagrams such as plans, flowcharts, and organization charts — anything that will increase your audience's understanding. Remember: a picture is worth a thousand words. Use one whenever possible....
How Important Is Cultural Awareness In Business (06/14/2011)
... In other countries, the norm is to give people the answer that they want to hear when they ask a question - which can be highly confusing in business negotiations! This is commonplace in Japan, Mexico or Lebanon. Maintaining eye contact is viewed as being important in America and those who don't do it arouse suspicion for being shifty. However in other countries, an attempt to keep eye contact is viewed as being aggressive, and it's particularly offensive in countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. However, if you're negotiating in Saudi Arabia, make sure you do keep open and consistent eye contact, as it's viewed as being highly important to facilitating communication. There are other more specific cultural differences too, which if not followed, can cause great offence....
Characteristics of the Effective Enterprise (08/30/2010)
... The complexity may appear deceptively simple since the operational and structural functions can only be partially observed and understood, and it is tempting to focus only on what is readily apparent —what is directly observable. Nonetheless, the interplay of individual factors cannot be reduced to the study of separate elements. The interrelatedness requires that the systemic effects be considered to the greatest extent possible. The effective enterprise can be described by many observable characteristics such as: Philosophy, Leadership, and Strategy 1 The management and operating philosophy focus on creating environments and practices that promote the best possible performance. 2 Top and middle management act as leaders and provide behavioral examples and role models and practice governance with integrity, purpose, and consistency....
